The UI variant dialog has seven options, starting with the standard toolbar and including a tab that says “most similar to the ribbon used by Microsoft”, but in reality the look and feel is very different. As a result, today’s LibreOffice has some ribbon-like features, a drop-down menu, and options for customizing your mix. On the other hand, familiarity with Microsoft Office raised expectations that other Office suites would follow. Some users preferred the old drop-down menu, which was the selling point of alternatives such as OpenOffice, where LibreOffice was forked. Menu bloat is a problem with these large Office applications that Microsoft has addressed with the Office 97 Ribbon UI.
